The S&P 500 was lower Tuesday, as signs of stronger-than-expected consumer spending dented hopes that the Federal Reserve won't resume rate hikes later this year.
The S&P 500 fell 0.9% lower, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.9%, or 310 points, Nasdaq fell 0.8%.

The U.S. dollar edged lower in early European trade Tuesday, but remained near recent highs, while the Chinese yuan saw volatile trading after the country's central bank unexpectedly cut key policy rates.
At 02:00 ET (06:00 GMT), the Dollar Index, which tracks the greenback against a basket of six other currencies, traded 0.1% lower at 102.982, after hitting a 1-1/2-month high at 103.46 late Monday.

The U.S. dollar gained in early European trade Monday, rebounding from losses after Friday’s payrolls data ahead of this week’s release of inflation data from the world's two largest economies.
At 03:05 ET (07:05 GMT), the Dollar Index, which tracks the greenback against a basket of six other currencies, traded 0.2% higher at 102.082, climbing away from Friday's low of 101.73.
